Misericordia Candy Days — Volunteers Needed

Everyone,

Want to spend time working with other ASL members for a good cause? Enjoy the outdoors? Free either Friday, April 23rd, or Saturday, April 24th, for a few hours?

Join us for the annual Misericordia Candy Days, one of our projects for giving back to the community.

I received both a mail notification and a phone message at school this week telling me we can have our usual corner — 171st & Harlem Ave. — for this event.

What do we do? Working in two hour shifts, we collect donations for Misericordia Home and present Jelly Belly packets as a thank you to those donating. We literally stand on the corner of 171st & Harlem. I’ve ordered good weather (sunshine, warm temps) for that weekend, and for the past three years, my order has been filled.

What’s needed? A sunny disposition, comfortable shoes, and a hat!

Why volunteer? It’s a great way to add community service to your resume with a small commitment of your time. And, it’s a great opportunity to network with other ASL members and other community members. Finally, the donations collected via this event help make the many programs offered by Misericordia possible.

Available and interested in participating? Send an email to ASLtinleyparkchapter@gmail.com.

Please remember to include your name and your choice of time and day. We’ll send an email confirmation now, but we’ll also send an email reminder one week prior to the event.

Here are the times for the corner (171st & Harlem, same as last year) we’ve been assigned to staff:

Attention Graduating Mu Eta Chapter Members!

If you are graduating this academic year, as a current member of ASL, you are eligible to order academic regalia from the national organization’s home page. (If you order on your own, you will need to follow-up with the national organization.)

However, in the past, the Mu Eta chapter has organized an academic regalia order for graduating members. This helps reduce the shipping and handling costs for individuals.

If you wish to order regalia as part of our chapter group order, we will need the money no later than Friday, January 29th. Either mail this to Professor Camin at the campus address on her emails, or leave your check and order in an envelope marked to her attention with one of the student workers in the reception area in Academics. Please remember to make checks payable to SAA — Student Activities Association.

We use the 2-Day UPS shipping option, just to be safe, as it takes time to get our order approved by SAA and sent to the national organization via the U.S postal service. Then, we allow at least three business days for the national organization to process the order before shipping the items to us. Also, if we have problems, this gives us time to get the issue resolved, and it guarantees we have the regalia in time for the Graduation Reception/Induction Ceremony on campus, planned for Tuesday, February 16th.

We’ve estimated a $4.50 shipping cost per item, based on at least ten items being ordered by members, which is a great savings:

Academic Honor Cords = $21.00 (includes shipping and handling fee)

Honor Stoles = $23.00 (includes shipping and handling fee)

Mortar Board Tassels = $15.00 (includes shipping and handling fee)

So, if you wanted to order all three, you would indicate this and include a check for $59.

Questions? Please email us at asltinleyparkchapter@gmail.com.

Another Fundraising Success!

Once again we’ve had a successful Marcus Theater Ticket fundraiser!

Our members’ movie ticket orders earned $68.40 for the 2010 Mu Eta Scholarship award. So far, we’ve collected $368, but we still have a few more months.

Watch for details about the annual scholarship competition and another movie ticket fundraiser!

Spread the Holiday Cheer & Feed America

I get numerous emails, but this one caught my eye.

Kraft Foods had some great suggestions for hosting a Potluck to help collect foods for local pantries, but the email also provided an easy way to get involved with relatively little effort.

And, unlike some of the SPAM emails we see this time of year, this comes from the corporation’s monthly emailed newsletter, so it’s legit!

Many of us send holiday greetings via email, so why not send one for a good cause?

I’m sharing the note and the link so that some of you might take advantage of this great opportunity to help Kraft Foods meet its goal:

“Join the one million meal fight against hunger.

It’s Easy. For every free e-card you send, Kraft Foods will donate 10 meals to Feeding America*. Just visit kraftrecipeforjoy.com from November 16 through December 31 to participate.”

Feel free to pass this along!!!!

Fall Marcus Theater Ticket Fundraiser Closes Tomorrow!

Just a reminder that completed orders (with payment) are due tomorrow. Drop these off on campus to Professor Camin in Academics, 2210.

Forgot the details? I’m adding the flyer here:

Want to save money on movie tickets and extend this opportunity to family and friends? What about earning free movie tickets as well as money towards the annual Alpha Sigma Lambda banquet, ASL graduation regalia or other ASL fees? How about helping your Mu Eta chapter annually recognize an outstanding faculty member on the Tinley Park campus and provide scholarship opportunities for Tinley Park students?

During the 2008 summer term, our chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda began a fundraising campaign in partnership with Marcus Theaters. We sell movie tickets and gift certificates for use at any Marcus Theater and earn a small percentage for our chapter.

The tickets are a great price — $8 a piece for VIP Platinum (use anytime) tickets or $6 a piece for VIP Silver (some restrictions) tickets. For every pair of tickets purchased, Marcus includes a coupon for a free popcorn – a great selling tool! The gift certificates, in increments of $5, $10 or $25, can be used for movies or for use at the Marcus resorts.

Plus, those selling $200 or more will earn two free VIP Silver tickets for their own use or to pass along as gifts. As an additional incentive, we’ll “share” the percentage earned with participating members, providing an opportunity to earn banquet fees, ASL graduation regalia costs, or other ASL event fees. (Enterprising members could even earn the complete cost!)

Order forms were distributed during this year’s banquet and the SU 2009 Induction Ceremony & Graduation Reception, but you can download and print the attachment. Take orders and complete the form, collect the money with the orders, and ask your customers writing checks to make these payable to SAA, Student Activities Association. Then, turn in the order form and money collected to our fundraising chair (currently Professor Camin) no later than Monday, November 30, 2009.

When the tickets arrive, we’ll call you to pick these up and distribute them to your customers. (The tickets are shipped out the same business day or the next when the order is received. They use UPS ground and ship out of Milwaukee, so the order should be delivered to Tinley Park the next day or the day after that.)

Too busy this term? Don’t worry. We’re planning a movie fundraising campaign for the spring!

Our chapter has undertaken some great projects over the past two years, but we need the support of our members if we hope to continue. This is a great way to get involved if time is an issue! And, as always, we thank you for your support.

Women & Leadership Event

I’ve copied this verbatim from an email I received as part of the POD (Professional and Organizational Development) listserv. If anyone “attends,” please post a reply to help me see if I should post future events from this coordinator:

“Skirt Strategies”

Doesn’t that phrase grab your attention? And the information in this teleseminar will not only grab your attention but will give you tools to support your success
as a woman leader. (And it’s free). Here’s the webpage with more information: http://meggin.com/SkirtStrategies.php

Jacqueline Bisset said: “Her mode of conduct, a standard of courage, discipline,
fortitude, and integrity, can do a great deal to make a woman beautiful.”

I would agree – and would extend that to “…can do a great deal to convey a woman’s strong leadership.”

Katie Snapp, speaker, coach, and author of Skirt Strategies: 249 Success Tips for Women in Leadership has graciously agreed to offer a 90-minute teleseminar for women who are ready to invest their time in learning what Katie is ready to teach us. Since one of my goals through Emphasis on Excellence, Inc. is to introduce resources to support your quest for a continuing emphasis on excellence, I’m thrilled to be hosting this teleseminar.

You received this announcement either because you *are* a woman who strives for successful leadership and/or you *know* women who strive for successful leadership.

Let’s get the word out to as many women as we can – so please forward this email (or just this webpage link: http://meggin.com/SkirtStrategies.php) to friends,
colleagues, and family who would benefit from learning what Katie is going to be teaching in her session on December 1st.

Thanks! I look forward to ’seeing’ (hearing) you in the class. Like all my teleseminars, it will be recorded so even if you can’t be there ‘live,’ you will receive the recording and materials right afterwards.

Upcoming Make-Up Induction Ceremony & Graduation Reception

Although some of our newest members of the MU ETA Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda honor society were inducted at our annual banquet in September, this Tuesday, October 13th, we’ll officially welcome the rest of the group.

Additionally, by special request, we’ll combine a graduation reception with the induction ceremony this term. This will give our graduating members and their families and friends a chance to mingle with other ASL members, faculty and staff prior to the big event Sunday, October 25th.

Please join us in congratulating both groups!

2008-2009 Academic Year in Review

As we near the Labor Day holiday and the banquet looms in the not-too-distant future, it seems appropriate to recap our chapter’s highlights for the past year.

And what an exciting year it was! There were a few “firsts,” like this blog, our new Website, the Marcus Fundraising Campaign and the Mu Eta Scholarship Boot Camp. We also continued the many projects we began in 2007 and 2008 — Misericordia Candy Days, Mu Eta Chapter Scholarship, Excellence in Teaching & Mentoring Faculty award, and the employer letters for new inductees.

Can you believe in the past two years we’ve awarded $930 in scholarship money via our annual Mu Eta Chapter Scholarship? We gave one student $530 in our inaugural year of the award (2008) and this year two winners split the $400 raised for this purpose. Fantastic!

FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

Last summer saw the debut of our Marcus Theater Fundraising Campaign, a program we began to help support our annual Mu Eta Chapter Scholarship. A number of ASL members stepped up to the challenge and either took orders or purchased tickets themselves. During the year, we sold 323 tickets for a total $2093.50 and earned $200 profit, which we added to the $200 earned through the Jeans Days fund. This provided each of this year’s winners with $200 towards their tuition for the 2009-2010 academic year. A special thanks goes out to all those who sold or purchased tickets, including our salesperson of the year, Gayle Allen, who sold $442 worth of tickets!

Watch this blog and the Mu Eta Website for information and order forms for this year’s Marcus Ticket Fundraiser beginning in October.

ANOTHER FUNDING SOURCE FOR THE 2010-2011 SCHOLARSHIP

Beginning with the summer term, to augment our fundraising efforts, a portion of our membership fees will be set aside to support the Mu Eta Chapter Scholarship. We are hoping this will help us meet our goal of providing at least $500 to each applicant chosen to represent our chapter in the ASL national competition next March.

MU ETA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP CONTINUES

For the second year of our annual chapter scholarship, to encourage greater participation, Professor Camin held two Boot Camp workshops in February focused on helping students learn how to write a winning personal statement (part of the application process).

Once more, faculty stepped forward to write letters of recommendation for applicants, and a group of faculty and staff reviewed the applications to choose the two students who would represent our chapter in the national ASL scholarship competition. A special thanks goes out to Sr. Professor Karen Janik, Associate Professor (now Associate Dean) Ken Schmidt, and Instructor Larry Panozza who took the time to write letters of recommendations. Never an easy task, these three extolled the applicants’ outstanding qualities, which helped make the judges’ decision so difficult. :-)

We also thank our panel of judges for their generous gift of time: Layton Cooper, Career Services Advisor; Associate Professor Maeve Duffey; Evelyn Hill (Keller); Professor Ed Leipus; Associate Dean Gil Martinez; and Tracy Yukich, Admissions Advisor.

2ND ANNUAL EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING & MENTORING FACULTY AWARD

For the second year in a row, Dean Adam Wittorp (ASL member, 2007) took charge of our annual Excellence in Teaching & Mentoring Faculty award competition. This year he single-handedly organized the nomination and voting process, compiled the votes and ordered the trophy, which will be presented to Associate Professor Deborah Edwards during our annual banquet in September. (Last year he was assisted by Alvin Fritscher, III, another ASL member, 2008, who graduated this past March.) Next year, we’re hoping to use the Mu Eta Forum to generate greater interest and streamline the nomination and voting process.

COMMUNITY SERVICE REMAINS STRONG

Once again, Mu Eta members stepped up to the challenge and volunteered for the annual Misericordia Candy Days event the last weekend in April. Joining volunteers from area hospitals, businesses, schools and Jewel-Osco stores, we helped raise $858,803.00! This marked the third year our chapter has participated in this community service event. Last year, Associate Professor Deborah Edwards joined us.

A special thanks goes out to her and those ASL members who have given their time to this cause, a few volunteering both days or for two or more shifts on a given day: Gayle Allen (2007; 2008; 2009); Lisa Days-Martin (2008); Carlene Ferguson (2008; 2009); Robin Jones (2009); Lyn Moody (2007); Nekia Parchman (2007); Andrea Reed (2009); Soledad Rocha (2008); Lesley Smith (2007; 2008); and Professor Denise Camin (2007; 2008; 2009), who also coordinates our volunteers each year.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE…

The bar has been set high for the 2009-2010 academic year. Let’s see if we can build a chapter that epitomizes the ASL motto, First in Scholarship & Leadership!

Now, get ready to honor our volunteers, scholarship winners, faculty award winner, new inductees and graduates at this year’s banquet.

Then, begin thinking about the year ahead.

Congratulations to Our New Inductees!
